The student is aware of the difference between personal preference, personal moral conviction, different cultural perspectives and a manager’s professional responsibility – The student also understands how moral and immoral behavior impacts the immediate and professional leisure environment.
How I have accomplished the learning goal
Item 1
The first item that shows I have met the learning goal is the presentation for my personal playground session. The topic of the playground session is cultural differences and diversity. Within this session we talked about personal experiences with the topic, we gave them information and we gave them some assignments. I have always found this topic interesting and working with it showed me that I think it is really important for me to work with people or at a company that have the same morals as I have. With the assignments in the presentation we let the students work towards an idea that would improve the number of people working in the company with different ethnicities and how they would achieve this. I think this presentation shows I have knowledge of the importance of the topic and how to approach it in such a way that it is informative but still educational and fun.
Item 2
The second item that shows I have met the learning goal is the reflection I wrote for the documentary Liberated: The new sexual revolution. I also reflected on this movie for English and found it was a good deliverable for this goal. The topic of the movie is spring break in America, this event is seen as one of the most morally incorrect events as there are things happening that are not seen as normal. There are cases of rape and harassment, those cases will sketch a bad image for the spring break events that are held each year. The movie made me see that I indeed have morals that I find are important, but also that things that are happening like these can completely ruin the image of the event itself. Events like these can be seen as normal for some people in America, however I believe people to not speak up against it because those things have been going on for years. I think because it is not one event it is almost impossible to find a solution, but I believe that it is very important for the people in charge to set some rules and boundaries. With doing this they might create a better image for the event itself as well. Because of the stuff happening at spring break people might also look differently at other events that are organized for students, this is not a good image for the industry as it generalizes bad behavior.
Item 3
The third item that shows I have met the learning goal is the presentation we had for DGTL. For this project we could pick one of the SDG’s, we choose to dive into the topic of inclusivity and diversity. Looking at DGTL itself it can be said that they are very sustainable in terms of recycling and being circular, tough our research we found out that they however are lacking on the areas of giving back to the community and in the social part of sustainability. Because of the finding in our research we focused on the social part of sustainability. The importance of having inclusivity on your festival is immense, you want to accept everyone into your festival as this will give everyone a safe space and environment, portraying this to the outside world will also give you a good image for the possible future visitors. Another part of our solution was focused on the ecosystem around the festival ground, even though I am personally not that interested in this topic, research showed us that DGTL can improve on this area so we used it in our concept. The presentation shows that I know the importance of having a good image to the outside world, but also that I know how to separate personal preferences and the actual goal of the deliverable your handing in.
What I have learned
I think in regards of this topic I had no idea how important it was for your festival to have a good image to the outside world. During on of the playground sessions we talked about ethical dilemmas in the industry. this thought me that there are a lot of things you have to think about when managing a festival and that it is almost impossible to make the right decision every time. This can be connected to an individuals morals but also personal preferences. I think it is important for people to stay connected to their own ideas and perspectives as this will make it easier for them to work with people. This year thought me that it is hard to pretend you like doing something and working with people with completely different ideas then you, you have to pretend you like something and work towards a goal this is hard. I do however know how to separate my preferences from the task at hand, but I will still value the morals I have in the process. There is a difference between not liking doing something or going out of what you believe in and stand for.
What went wrong
I think there are a few things that went wrong when looking at this learning goal. Sometime I forget that some people might not have the same ideas and knowledge as me on a certain topic, and it can make me to have a discussion with them about the topic instead of us working towards the goal the company wants us to achieve. In this case I will try to adjust my view and work together towards the end goal together. What also went wrong is the difference in work attitude when comparing to different cultures, I think it is important to have an understanding of how certain cultures work professionally. I might be good friends with people outside of work, but their way of working and communication in a professional sense might be completely different. This happened in a few of the projects this year, I have noticed that there are big differences in the way of working and this will lead to some misunderstanding and annoyance in the group.
What I still want/ need to learn
I think It is important for me to stay close to who I am and work with people that have the same vision and values a I do. I have noticed that sometimes I will cross my own line, this happens more than I want, and I feel like I can mean more to the group when I am working on something I really believe in. I think it is also important that I know how to sometimes separate my interests from the actual goal at hand, I have noticed that I sometimes lose motivation when working on something that I don’t have a big interest in, I want to change this. I also want to learn more about how certain situation can influence the way people view a festival and what are morally good ways to solve this whilst keeping your visitors happy. I think it is important to have a good image and I want to learn how to solve issues to keep this up.
