The student can write for different audiences in English, including intercultural audiences.
Reflection:
How I have met the learning goal
Item 1:
for the first item of this learning goal the audience was our classmates age, so gen Z. We thought it was a good idea to create something that would be easy to relate to for people our age. We recorded a lot of small fragments where we randomly picked words to be the topic of the podcast. This came out to be a great conversation starter, and therefor turned into good relatable conversations. With the podcast we tried to get everyone involved and talked about topics that were easy to relate to wherever you are from. If we would have focused on a different target group, we should have talked about more serious topics and not talk so care free. It should have been another topic with a more serious tone.
Item 2:
For the second item we had to create a podcast, this podcast was not planned to be about the topic we talked about at all, but in the end it turned out to be more interesting then expected. In this podcast we talked about the difficulties of international students. The podcast could have been a bit more professional but I think it was still professional enough to be interesting also for older people, and not just people our age. The topic was easy to listen to for people our age (gen Z) but also older people. We were just beneath the line of it being not serious enough anymore for older people to listen to, but that makes it so interesting.
Item 3:
This item was used because I think it is an interesting topic, I think the movie itself is not something that older people would want to watch. I believe it is a topic that is taboo and crosses a line really fast. I believe however that with my reflection on it they might get a different look on it and might be wanting to learn more about the dangers shown in the movie. This should be something that needs to be talked about and not ignored and I try to make that clear in my reflection. I want to be able to bring across the importance of the movie. The reflection is written in a serious tone, this is to really bring across the point to any target group that wants to read it.
Item 4:
My profile statement is the fourth item that was used for this learning goal. This is something we had to write in class and I firstly had no idea how to do it. I think this statement meets the learning goal because it is written for high end people. I had never written something to promote myself in a neat and nice way, I think a profile statement is exactly that and I tried to replicate it. In the profile statement I tried to write with a broad and neat vocabulary instead of when I would write something for my friends in abbreviations.
Item 5:
The fifth and last item for this learning goal is an email I had sent to the exchange department to ask for some documentation. This email can be seen as something I would call in between. It lies exactly between professional but also casual. This is the way I like to write to teachers, but also to departments in school. I write this way when I feel like there is no need to be posh and professional all the way. If I where to write to a company or guest I would have exchanges some words for a better vocabulary, but also made my sentence in a way that it sounds a bit better than it does in this email.
What I have learned
I have learned that it you have multiple different audiences and ways to write to people, I did not expect it to be so different when writing something. For example a profile statement is way different than an email because you need to get a different point across. Now when I see some people communicating I immediately think about if I would have done it differently or in a more professional or more relaxed way. I also came across some big mistakes when looking at some peoples communication, I found that they, a lot of the times, use multiple words that do not fit in a sentence or make mistakes in grammar. I am definitely paying more attention to how I am communicating and the audience I am communicating with.
What I still want/ need to learn
I think I still need to enhance my skill of writing to different cultures. I am very focused on not crossing any cultural boundaries that may exist when talking to or with someone, however I have found that sometimes things get lost in translation. I believe that when typing anything online instead of saying it in real life this happens even faster than normal. I would say it is very important to know some pointers of what you can or can not say in a conversation. This is something I still want to learn and get better at, I also believe it is good for everyone to do this since we live together and everyone would benefit from it.
